Food Waste Action Week 2025
March 7, 2025

This year’s Food Waste Action Week has arrived!
From 17 – 23 March 2025, we will be supporting Food Waste Action Week which will be themed around buying loose (wherever possible) to avoid unnecessary waste.
Do you ever buy big packs of fruit and veg and then end up throwing some of the pack away? If you do, then you’re not alone. Every year in the UK we throw away 1.7 million tonnes of fruit and veg. We buy too much and then don’t get around to eating it in time.
Research from Love Food Hate Waste has shown that if all apples, bananas and potatoes were sold loose, 8.2 million shopping baskets’ worth of food waste could be prevented every year. That’s simply because when fruit and veg is sold loose, you can buy the amount that you need and can use. Therefore, not only do you cut waste by buying loose, but you could also cut your costs.
Buying your fruit and veg loose also means that you can choose the quality that you prefer too – a slightly greener banana, one rosy, red apple or the perfect potatoes for jackets! So, why not give it a try?
Wherever it’s not possible to buy food items loose, could you split a bag of fruit or vegetables with family or friends if you know you won’t be able to use them all? Or batch cook several meals using all of it and pop some in the freezer?
We will be sharing information on our @LeicestershireRecycles Facebook page across the week, but if you’re inspired to cut costs and cut waste, you can find more information about reducing food waste at the Love Food Hate Waste page on our website or visit www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
